Buy Short Term Disability Preconception

Woman with shopping bags with city skyline in backgroundBuying short term disability insurance, means buying coverage at the right time. Buying coverage too early translates into less maternity leave pay: your higher costs eat into your fixed benefit for normal delivery. Buy coverage too late and your pregnancy will not be covered.

Buy your policy at the ideal time and protect your family finances in three ways:

  • Ensure coverage; pregnancy is a pre-existing condition
  • Maximize your maternity pay
  • Avoid pre-term delivery complications
Buy short term disability insurance at the ideal time: about three months before you conceive. Buying coverage at this time protects you in three ways:
    • Pregnancy is a pre-existing condition: If you are already pregnant your existing pregnancy will not be covered. You can still get a policy that covers accidents, illnesses, and future pregnancies.
    • Preserve maternity leave pay: Your benefit for normal delivery may greatly exceed the premium you pay; depending upon the number of months before you deliver.
    • Avoid pre-term delivery complications: 12% of babies are born premature. Your policy will contain a nine month exclusion for normal delivery. By buying short term disability insurance three months before you conceive you minimize the chances of delivering inside the exclusion period.

      Build in Time for Delays

Many women visit our site expecting they can start a policy by completing an insurance application over the web, or with a paper application mailed to them at home. The expectation is they complete some paperwork, send in a monthly check, and coverage for normal pregnancy is in place.

      Sounds simple and easy right?

If only it were that easy. Take the time to compare the premium cost paid to the insurer to the projected maternity payments the insurer makes back to you in return. It will help you understand why insurers only sell policies covering normal pregnancy through worksite groups.

Getting your employer to offer an employee paid option is fairly easy, but takes extra steps, and often causes delays that are out of your control and ours. Build in extra time needed to get your employer on board, the educate your co-workers, and capture their election choices in addition to yours.
