Hawaii Infertility Insurance Mandate

Hawaii Law Mandating IVF Coverage

Hawaii Infertility Insurance Mandate

The Hawaii law mandates the all health insurers that provide pregnancy related benefits to cover the out patient treatment cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF).  This is a one-time only benefit. The law applies to individual and group plans, hospital contracts, and medical services plans.

Patients need to meet specific conditions in order to get their IVF covered.
You must have at least a five year history of infertility, or show an underlying medical condition.

Loans and FinancingLoans and FinancingCouples without an infertility health policy may face a cash shortage. Infertility and IVF financing allows you to start treatment and repay the loan over time. This is scary. You are borrowing money right before losing mom’s income, introducing unplanned medical expenses and adding a new baby. Discover how to get an interest free loan from your employer. Protect your credit with supplemental benefits.

Hawaii Infertility Treatments not Covered

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is often the last line of treatment for couples trying to conceive.  Many other treatments including fertility drugs, artificial insemination, and more are not subject to this regulation.

In addition the Hawaii mandate stipulates that a patient must have five years of unexplained infertility, or prove that there is an underlying medical condition.  That poses a difficult choice for couples trying to conceive:

  • Should we pay for other infertility treatments ourselves right away?
  • Should we wait five years and go straight for IVF even though other treatments may work?

An Interim Solution

For those who don't want to wait consider this:

  • Cut your infertility costs by leveraging the tax code and flexible spending accounts.
  • Use supplemental health insurance to create income from your normal delivery to offset your infertility treatment costs, and get additional security for complications.

(Hawaii Revised Statutes, Sections 431-lOA-116.5 and 432.1-604)

Supplemental PoliciesSupplemental PoliciesSupplemental maternity policies fill important holes for growing families.  Mom may need to miss time from work before delivery, and may be in and out of the hospital if she experiences a high-risk pregnancy.  If your infant(s) require a NICU stay there may be extra bills to pay.  Couples undergoing infertility treatment may find an added bonus for multiples!
