New Jersey Short Term Disability Insurance is an important benefit for any worker that might get sick, hurt, or have a baby.  NJ has one of the nation’s richest state disability benefits and paid family leave programs, which are most frequently used for pregnancy and maternity leave. 

NJ maternity leave benefits may last up to 18 weeks for a normal maternity leave, and longer if pregnancy complications arise.  But not every NJ resident qualifies for each benefit, and limitations apply.  Ask yourself, do I qualify?  How long can I pay my bills with a 1/3 pay cut or more?  Find some answers below:

NJ Paid Family LeaveNJ Paid Family LeaveThe New Jersey Paid Family Leave Act allows for 6 weeks of partially paid leave to bond with your baby and/or care for a sick family member. You can claim NJ Family Leave Insurance benefits to bond with a newborn child during the first 12 months after the child’s birth. You, your spouse, your domestic partner or your civil union partner must be the biological parent of the child.

NJ Short Term Disability Increases Maternity Leave Pay

Short term disability in NJ supplements the state disability insurance mandated for private workers. NJ temporary disability insurance replaces up to 2/3 of your income or $561 per week.  That is a least a 1/3 pay cut, or more if your gross income is higher than $43,000 per year.

New Jersey allows for 18 weeks of partial income replacement for a normal pregnancy.  If complications arise you may miss more than 18 weeks.  How long can you pay your bills with a paycut of 1/3 or more?

If the answer is "not long enough", consider purchasing a supplemental policy that will increase your maternity leave pay.  Give yourself the flexibility to rest comfortably at home without the financial worry.  

NJ Short Term Disability Insurance

New Jersey short term disability insurance can protect your income in case of accidents and illnesses that may cause you to miss work. You rely on your income to pay your mortgage, car payments, etc. Wouldn't it make sense to insure the asset that helps pay these bills - your health and ability to earn an income?

If you were to become disabled tomorrow and couldn't work for two or three months, would you have enough savings to cover living expenses during that time? If not, you may want to consider New Jersey short-term disability insurance.

Short Term Disability Insurance in NJ can replace up to 2/3 of your income or $5,000 per month - whichever is less. Benefit periods range from 3 months to 24 months. You can select from of range of elimination periods to help keep your premiums affordable.

Use short term disability in NJ to supplement what the states pays.  State benefits are capped at $559 per week in 2011, and last for only six months. 

NJ State Disability Insurance

NJ State Disability Insurance comes in two forms:

  • Mandated temporary disability insurance: covers private workers for up to six months
  • Social security benefits: covers those with disabilities expected to last one year or more
New Jersey TDINew Jersey TDINJ state short term disability replaces up to 66% of your income or $559 per week in 2011 - whichever is less. If your income exceeds $42,000 per year, you hit the cap. Your NJ state disability benefit will be subject to state and federal taxation. New Jersey state short term disability benefits last for 26 weeks.

NJ state disability: Social Security benefits is for long term disabilities. "The law defines disability as the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity (work) by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment(s), which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months."

"There are two programs, Social Security Disability Insurance (Title II) and Supplemental Security Income (Title XVI), that pay benefits to individuals who are found to be disabled under the law. Title II provides cash benefits for those disabled workers, who have contributed to the Social Security Trust Fund, and pays benefits to their dependents. Title XVI (SSI) provides monthly payments to aged, blind and disabled people with limited income and resources."
