Extend Your Maternity Leave Pay

Plus, Protection for Extended Postpartum Recovery

During childbirth, the delivery may not always go as smoothly as hoped. Mother can be injured during delivery when a birth accident occurs.  The main birth injuries and disorders that might affect you include vaginal tears, fissures, incorrect suturing following an episiotomy or Caesarean, infections, and postpartum hemorrhage.

These postpartum disorders may cause you to miss more than the standard maternity leave of six to eight weeks for your normal delivery, or you may need to be re-admitted to the hospital.  Let's say you earn $54,000 per year, live in Texas, and work as a nurse.

Short Term Disability Insurance would replace 2/3 of your monthly income or $3,000 per month less a 1 week elimination period.  Short term disability may continue to pay benefits up to the selected benefit period, provided you provide proof that you remain disabled.

Hospital Indemnity Insurance pays a cash benefit directly to you when admitted to the hospital.  The admission benefit of $3,000 is paid regardless of your underlying health insurance plan design.  Hospital indemnity insurance may pay additional cash benefits directly to you if you need to be re-admitted to the hospital for an unrelated medical condition, or after 90 days for a related medical condition.

Benefit for Postpartum Disorder - Example

Let's suppose you develop an infection after your c-section delivery.  You need to be re-admitted to the hospital for treatment, and stay for three nights.  After your discharge, your doctor orders you to stay home from work for one month beyond your normal 8 weeks maternity period.
