Tennessee Short Term Disability Insurance

Growing families are often two income households. During the time just before having children, many couples need two incomes to get established. There are houses to buy and finance, cars, furniture, etc. The list of things needed is very long. The costs can  be very high, but the income is not always there to meet every need or desire. So couples often borrow money during this life-stage: a mortgage, car note, credit cards, etc. The expectation is these loans will be repaid with future income.

All goes well until something happens to one or both income streams. Then it becomes very hard to make timely payments on each and every bill. You insure your home and your car. Wouldn't it be sensible to also insure your ability to make these payments: your paycheck?

Tennessee short term disability insurance protects your paycheck in case you are unable to work due to a covered accident or sickness. Nobody is immune from having an accident. In fact, younger more active people are more likely to suffer an accident that prevents them from working. Some of the more physically demanding occupations are filled by workers under the age of forty. Even a simple accident could prevent you from working. Why take chances?

Tennessee Short Term Disability: Pregnancy, Maternity Leave

Tennessee and voluntary employee benefits share something in common beyond the obvious nickname. Short term disability insurance is the most commonly requested benefit by working women. And several insurance carriers offer policies that are designed to be paid for by the employees through a payroll deduction. The policies cover normal pregnancy, allowing women to create their own paid maternity leave benefits.

When bought prior to conception short term disability makes cash payments for eight weeks for a c-section delivery, and six weeks for a vaginal birth. The cash payments made are often about three times what a women of childbearing age might pay in premiums over twelve months. The policy can pay for itself. Working women who are planning a pregnancy have the ideal motivation to purchase a policy: they plan to use the benefit, and can time the purchase to fit their schedule.

Short term disability for pregnancy provides other important protections beyond maternity leave income for a perfectly healthy mom and baby. Sometimes complications arise, and mom needs to be placed on medical bed rest. Women can miss weeks or months of income. Often times the family does not have adequate savings to make ends meet. A policy that safeguards your paycheck makes all the sense in the world - particularly when it pays for itself during a normal pregnancy.

Tennessee State Disability

There are only five states with mandated short term disability coverage and Tennessee is not included in the group. Residents and workers must purchase private plans to cover temporary income losses.

Tennessee state disability consists solely of Social Security Disability benefits.  Benefits may be permanent, but you must be totally disabled, and your disability must be expected to last 12 months or longer. If you are disabled and need help paying bills you should contact the Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services. This department administers Social Security Disability benefits.

Tennessee Maternity Leave Laws

State maternity leave laws consist of the TN Family Medical Leave Act.  The law when combined with the Federal act may provide unpaid job-protected leave for differing population segments. The two laws works differently in terms of who is covered, and how the laws are applied.
