  • Short Term Disability for Pregnancymaternity leave pay for normal delivery, security in case of complications, plus benefits for postpartum disorders.
  • VA State Disability Insurance – covers long term conditions lasting one year or more.

Your employer is not required to purchase such a plan, and if you have individual coverage you may have nothing that covers a normal pregnancy. Virginia Short Term Disability: Pregnancy, Maternity

Many couples in VA are struggling to make ends meet before adding the expenses of a bigger car, baby furniture, new clothing, and more.  Add to this the out of pocket costs for any infertility treatments, and other un-reimbursed medical expenses associated with pregnancy. Workers commuting to Richmond, or DC often have the highest living expenses. A loss of income can put a damper on what should be a joyous occasion.

A Virginia temporary disability policy pays a six week benefit for your vaginal delivery, and an eight week benefit for your c-section birth. Cash payments begin after satisfying an elimination period - usually one or two weeks depending upon the amount of monthly income your policy is designed to cover. When timed well, the cash payments you receive for a normal experience may be several multiples of what the policy might cost.

In adddition, you may experience a loss for an accident, an illness, or you might need months of bed rest. All these exposures are covered as well, helping you to rest comfortably to ensure the health of your baby.

Virginia short term disability insurance for maternity can put your mind at ease. If you are thinking about getting having children, remember that you can purchase insurance that covers something you are expecting: having a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby!

Virginia Short Term Disability Insurance

Did you know that the most common place to have an accident is right in the home? A simple sprained ankle sustained walking down the steps at home may cause an income disruption for any worker that needs to be on his or her feet all day. Nurses, pharmacists, beauticians, food servers and many other female centric occupations require you to walk in order to perform your job duties.

Consider this: a policy that you buy to cover your pregnancy will also support your income if you become temporarily unemployed due to a covered accident. The policy premium pay to help you during your maternity leave will cover an income loss due to an accident as well.

Illnesses are not confined to the elderly. Autoimmune disorders are quite common even for younger, healthier women. These conditions can cause an interruption in income also. As before, your short term disability policy will make cash payments directly to you if you must stop working because of a covered sickness.

Why take chances when most growing families need both incomes to survive?

Virginia State Disability

Virginia does not have state mandated short term disability. Purchase a private policy through your employer using payroll deduction.

If you are disabled and need help paying bills you should contact the Virginia Disability Determination Services. This department administers Social Security Disability benefits.

Virginia Maternity Leave Laws

Many Virginians work for the federal government. State and local government employers are covered by the ADA and the FMLA, regardless of the number of employees so many of the holes associated with private employers do not apply. However there are not state specific regulations, so national laws provide the only job protection benefits.

Remember all maternity laws provide for unpaid job leave only. The only paid leave that is possible comes via unemployment insurance. However most women will not qualify until physically able to return to work. If your employer holds your job open no benefits are paid.
