Maryland maternity and family medical leave laws provide partial financial assistance for parents having children. However, they do not apply to every family.

Unpaid job-protected leave of absence from work means that families have less money coming. Those that do not qualify for these rights or exhaust them can lose their jobs and access to health insurance.

Health insurance plans make claims payments directly to doctors and hospitals to compensate them for providing medical care. The programs do not replace income.

The state of Maryland does not offer any financial assistance for temporary disability. Residents must purchase a private short-term disability policy to protect their family finances.
