Colorado does not mandate short-term disability coverage for workers in private industry. The taxpayers who support the state must purchase a policy on their own in advance of becoming sick, hurt, or pregnant.

The story is different for the state government employees supported by the same taxpayers who have automatic coverage paid for by the people they serve.


New parents, disabled workers, and caregivers often face weeks without pay during a parental or family medical leave. Colorado state laws offer unpaid job protections for certain workers. However, it does not offer paid leave benefits.
